Move over Grandma Moses. There’s another primitive folk artist who is creating wonderful original paintings depicting scenes of the past. The subject of this acrylic on canvas painting is the operation of a blacksmith shop/carriage maker factory. Steel is forged here for the wheels and buggy structures and they are then assembled and for sale to the rural community. The painting measures 22″ x 26″ in the wooden frame. It is signed “Hills” at the lower right (photo 2). The factory is depicted in woody shades of brown and there are three “openings” where the art viewer can look through the wooden doors or barn shudders and see the workers performing their craft. The green landscape around the shop shows horses, trees, a stream, farms and people inspecting the new carriages. The proprietor of the operation is “Caleb Westcott Achburten” (or so the overhead sign says) so it may be a scene in a Pennsylvania Dutch community. More research is needed on the artist “Hills” who created this whimsical masterpiece. A very well done piece in the style known as naive, primitive or folk art.
