Ex-Voto Mexican Retablo Folk Art Tin Sign Thanks St Nicolas from Train Wreck. This retablo is a handmade painting an original piece of Mexican folk art. The artist tells a story of thanks in words and picture. It is all hand painted directly onto the tin. The artist tells the following story: (loosely translated). Of August 1941, we were walking on the large bridge on our way to Totolapan, when all of a sudden a train engine came upon us. I was feeling hopeless that we werent going to make it to the end of the bridge. I was with my son Julian and asked for the holy protection of St Nicolas T, that he save us from dying. The tin is painted in dark tones and is done in a primitive style. You can see Catarino Gargia praying to St Nicolas T. Who is painted in the clouds. St Nicolas is looking down on Catarino and Julian on the bridge. The tin sign measures just about 9 inches across x 12 inches in height. This is an original piece of artwork, bought from the artist’s representative in Mexico. The date of creation is not known as the artists who do this type of work sometimes use a historic date to show context for the scene created. Sometimes the artists and their families hold on to works for many years before making them available for sale so it is impossible to say when it was created. Sometimes they make available pieces as they are created. The artist intended irregularities, uneven edges, slight bends in the tin, some tears, holes, rust, scratches and paint splotches. The Art of Mexico fine print. Joel is originally from Mexico and he buys original arts and crafts direct from artists and their families. I was on a trip there and found it in a little store in the heart of town. My decor has changed so much and it does not fit in anywhere and yet I love it and just hate to part with it. I know someone else will enjoy it as it is just a delightful piece and makes you happy just to look at it. It is in excellent, original condition. The paint and colors pop and are really beautiful. It is fairly large and measures approximately 18.5″w x 23.5″ L. The width of the mirror with the doors fully open is approximately 23.25. There is a hanger on the back for easy display. It is from a forever smoke free home. It will be packed carefully. Antique Mexican 1937 or OLDER Hand Carved Wood Hand Painted Festival Folk Art Tribal Mask 18″ X 11″ – Tourist Trade Piece. I acquired this mask from a family who’s grandparents had brought it back from an trip into Mexico. I was told this mask was acquired from the Southern region i don’t know if its tied to the region as historical or if it was just acquired from a local. As for its authenticity it is 100% original, but i do not believe this mask has tribal affiliation i believe it to be used for festivals or its just antique tourist trade piece, either way this was hand made from the region and is fairly old even at 1937.
