Fabulous Antique New England Folk Art Diorama Sailing Ship Victorian Nautical
This one is on glass; the other is smaller and on board. This diorama is a wonderful piece of antique Folk Art, a survivor of an art form that is becoming quite rare. This fabulous piece is in an old, faded Victorian period frame and was created on glass. The piece is not behind glass, it is not a shadowbox, and it is currently a little dirty from years of storage. The sails are cream colored, showing discoloration and grime from age. The hull is painted black. The front sail is missing its mast and the front is missing the browsprit; the outlines of both can still be seen on the painting (with a few small areas of paint loss). The ocean is very choppy, dark green and blue with white caps. There are painted clouds in the sky and a few sea gulls. There are areas of paint loss in the background, as shown in the photos. This is not signed, as far as I can tell. I believe this easily dates to the last quarter of the 19th century, if not earlier. This piece is quite dirty. I gave it a very light cleaning but it would benefit and look much brighter with additional cleaning. The frame is also dirty and discolored with chips and bumps. The back has remnants of its old paper dust covering and the painting is currently backed with corrugated cardboard. The piece (including the frame) is 18″ h x 21″ w. This is an amazing piece that reflects the sea going industry which was and is such a big part of south eastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the islands. A genuine piece of Americana. Fresh from an old Massachusetts estate. Please see my other items for more vintage and antique items found during my travels throughout New England. Fabulous Antique New England Folk Art Diorama Sailing Ship with Lighthouse
This one is on board; the other on glass. This diorama is a wonderful piece of antique Folk Art, a survivor of an art form that is becoming quite rare. This fabulous piece is in an old, faded, gilded Victorian period frame and was created on board. The piece is not behind glass, it is not a shadowbox, and it is currently a little dirty from years of storage. The sails are cream colored, showing discoloration and grime from age. The hull is painted black with a stripe and two tiny cabins on the deck; the black paint exhibits craquelure (alligatoring). The front sail is missing a small piece at the top; its outline can still be seen on the painting. The ocean is very choppy, dark green and blue with white caps. The lighthouse stands of an outcropping of rocks in the lower left of the piece; the lighthouse is a carved piece of wood. There are painted clouds in the sky and a few sea gulls. The back is wooden board, which I believe is the back of the painting. The piece (including the frame) is 12.5″ h x 18.5″ w. This is an amazing piece that reflects the sea going industry which was and is such a big part of south eastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. A genuine piece of Americana. FABULOUS EARLY AAFA ANTIQUE FOLK ART DAPPLE TOY ROCKING HORSE ORIGINAL PAINT. Up for sale is this wonderful early rocking horse. He’s an amazing sideboard horse. He’s in great condition for his age. And, he has a nice happy look to him! He base measures 48.75 inches long by 12.5 inches wide at the bottom (widest part). He is 26.5 inches high to the top of his head. He’s a white and black dapple horse with a green base and a little red saddle. He has painted eyes and parts of his leather bridle. He also has little leather trimming around his tail behind the saddle. He’s all hand painted with tons of character! He was well played with over the years and has wear and patina you’d expect. He appears to have all original paint and it’s crackled and alligatored as you can see in the pictures. He has a wooden arched base. The base is in pretty good shape and rocks nicely. As you can see in the pictures, he has some areas where his paint has chipped or flaked off. Overall he shows very well and these “issues” add character and proof of age to him. As you’d expect, there are scuffs and paint loss, scrapes, scratches, nicks, dings, holes in the sideboards, cracks, seams, edge wear, smudges and patina! What a great look!! He seems to still be very happy! We will do our best to answer your questions. Thank you for looking at this item. Let us know if you have any questions. Fabulous Folk Art Watercolor Portrait by A. Romano
Outstanding original watercolor portrait of tough looking African American enforcer/ protector from the early 1900s. Marked, Johnson/ I protect the/ POOR/ A. Fantastic composition, colors and content. A great looking image. As is typical of Romano’s work, the art is done on the inside of the original cardboard backing to an original 1910 frame, in which the art is presented. One of his best works with a strong portrait. Please note that photos are taken through glass – it looks even better in person. Primitive modernist, Antonio Romano, is a classically trained artist with ancestral roots dating back five generations, who developed a distinctive style combining modernism and narrative folk art, with an aura of surrealism and mystery. The influence of Man Ray, Giorgio De Chirico, the Italian Futurists, Paul Delvaux and Rene Magritte is acknowledged, but Romano has assimilated their influence and gone his own way to create stunning and provocative primitive modernist paintings that are carefully and skillfully conceived, designed and executed. Incorporating narrative folk artwork referencing American landscapes, scenes of historic action, or folk portraits of American Indians, soldiers and rogues, Romano is drawn to figurative reinterpretation of historic scenes and art of the past. A Fresco artist, Antonio Romano has a style that is reminiscent of a bygone era — influenced by the use of colors from that time as well as its imagery. His background as a fresco painter informs his unique contemporary style. Romano works with inks and dyes, often of his own formula, and with emulsions that he has created over the years, handed down by his ancestors. He applies his fresco and inks to the backsides of found canvases and discarded paintings that absorb his intricate layering of inks and images that transform the color palette giving the work a patina that communicates age and a modern sense of history. Romano was part of the emerging New York City art scene in the 1980s. He has done frescoes for the ceiling and walls of St. Marys Cathedral in Albany, Our Lady of Pompeii in Greenwich Village, and he designed the restaurant, Bella Blu Ristorante in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York where his frescos still hang on the walls. His works have been shown in several exhibitions including Art Port Gallery, New York, Mary Boone, New York, and John Sullivan Gallery, New York. Size: Frame is about 10″ x 15″. Please note, I replaced the older bent nails when cleaning the glass. Please use photos and description to determine condition. Thanks for your business. Fabulous Americana Folk Art Antique 19th Century Oil Painted Head Cloth Rag Girl
This is a Fabulous Americana Folk Art Antique 19th Century Oil Painted Head Cloth Rag Girl Doll in Calico Dress 28 Inch. I have had a few of these Americana folk art painted head cloth rag dolls over the years and I always marvel at the beautiful rendering of the hand painted facial features, hair, hands, feet and eyes that give these gals such a distinct glow about them. This tall 28 inch doll was beautifully made from cotton muslin, and rag/cotton/something-crunchy stuffed. Her folk art hand painting continues to her neck and upper torso. She was treadle machine sewn and hand stitched. She has mitt hands with opposing thumb, well defined fingers and toes, a well proportioned body (one arm a little longer than the other), jointed at the hip, knee and shoulders so she can sit, and she has some aging, staining and wear to the fabric as you would expect of an antique cloth doll. The shoulders have some restitching/repair work. Her oil painted face and hair were hand painted and beautifully rendered. The whites of her eyes were never painted. There is some wear to the paint and three fabric splits (one to the left eye and two to the chin). Along with her blue eyes, she has a realistically painted nose, flesh color skin, delightfully smiling heart shaped mouth, bright rosy cheeks and a molded chin achieved through sewn darts. Her facial structure fabric was gathered around the top of the head, and dark blond brush-stroke painted curls define the hair. The pink and white print calico dress is not original that I know of, but fits her very well. It was treadle machine sewn the wrist cuffs have been pinned to fit the wrist better so that her hands can be viewed. She has no underthings, but wears a white lace trimmed dimity apron so that her waist and form are defined. I always marvel at the hand painting and like to think that artists or itinerant artists possibly painted the heads for these dolls. They look so much like portraiture of the period.
