Ex-Voto Mexican Retablo Folk Art Tin Sign Thanks St Nicolas from Train Wreck. This retablo is a handmade painting an original piece of Mexican folk art. The artist tells a story of thanks in words and picture. It is all hand painted directly onto the tin. The artist tells the following story: (loosely translated). Of August 1941, we were walking on the large bridge on our way to Totolapan, when all of a sudden a train engine came upon us. I was feeling hopeless that we werent going to make it to the end of the bridge. I was with my son Julian and asked for the holy protection of St Nicolas T, that he save us from dying. The tin is painted in dark tones and is done in a primitive style. You can see Catarino Gargia praying to St Nicolas T. Who is painted in the clouds. St Nicolas is looking down on Catarino and Julian on the bridge. The tin sign measures just about 9 inches across x 12 inches in height. This is an original piece of artwork, bought from the artist’s representative in Mexico. The date of creation is not known as the artists who do this type of work sometimes use a historic date to show context for the scene created. Sometimes the artists and their families hold on to works for many years before making them available for sale so it is impossible to say when it was created. Sometimes they make available pieces as they are created. The artist intended irregularities, uneven edges, slight bends in the tin, some tears, holes, rust, scratches and paint splotches. The Art of Mexico fine print. Joel is originally from Mexico and he buys original arts and crafts direct from artists and their families. Mose Tolliver – Folk Art, Outsider Artist. This is one of Mose Tolliver’s hard-to-find flower paintings. It is 16″ x 16 1/2″, house paint/acrylic on salvaged wood with his own hanging tab on the rear. It is in very good condition although has imperfections associated with self taught art. Mose Tolliver, born in in Alabama, is one of the more celebrated self taught artists from the south. He was a prolific artist who work steadily until around the time he died in 2006. His work has been exhibited extensively in the US and around the world since his first solo exhibition in 1981. In 1982 his work was included in the influential folk art exhibition “Black Folk Art In America, 1930 – 1980″ at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Since then his work has been acquired by many museums including the Smithsonian. I loved Mose T’s work and bought this work in the early 2000’s from a collector who bought it directly from Mose T. It is hard to find paintings of his flowers – the colors are lovely. The item “Mose Tolliver, Folk Art Outsider Artist” is in sale since Sunday, July 18, 2021.
