Rare ANTIQUE 19th C NORWAY Wood LG PAINTED ALE BOWL Scandinavian Folk Art #1. May be in the Hallingdal style of painting- not sure though— The colorfully painted wonderfully painted bowl is in good condition throughout, with expected paint loss and wear and/or fading as expected. There is no label nor age details but it is believed and appears to be an older one. It is probably from Wisconsin or Minnesota. We have dealt in Dala horses, roosters and some Swedish bowls – we recently found antique 2 bowls at an antique show and had found1 dated and signed1958 a few years ago. 2 are believed to be from the late 19th C or early 1900s and from Norway. It has Norge painted on each side of the rim top. This one is typically referred to as an Ale Bowl and it is artfully painted and carved with a decoratively carved rim. It is a beautifully painted example with nice age and patina and a nice size one which is perfect for display or as a statement piece. This will make a great example for your Scandinavian or Folk Art collection. We are also listing the other 2 today as well. This one measures approx 14.25″ to outer edge of bowl on the long side and 11.5″ on the shorter side. It is approx 4″ tall and the base measures approx 4.75″ at the base. The paint has all beautifully mellowed and is a very colorful and artistically painted item. The decorated top of the bowl has paint wear as to be expected and it is nicely decorated with floral and classic rosemaling designs. Please see our other auctions for similar items. ORIGINAL HAITIAN ART PAINTING BY FAMOUS SAINCILUS ISMAEL. For collecting and home or office decoration. Subject: “La Manne du ciel” Manna by Angels (see below) Oil on Canvas Size 24 X 30 – Frame available. Even after his death in March 2000, Ismael is still considered one of the foremost contemporary Haitian painters. He was born in Petite Riviere de LArtibonite in April 1940. His paintings often revealed a mixture of voodoo and Christianity. Famous for his madonnas, Ismael also painted majo Joncand market scenes. He began his career as a painter in 1956 and worked as the director of the ceramics center in Deschapelles. Famous painters such as Michelange Altidort and Carlo Jean Baptiste were among his students. In the Hebrew Bible, manna is described twice: once in Exodus 16:136 with the full narrative surrounding it, and once again in Numbers 11:19 as a part of a separate narrative. In the description in the Book of Exodus, manna is described as being “a fine, flake-like thing” like the frost on the ground. It is described in the Book of Numbers as arriving with the dew during the night. Exodus adds that manna was comparable to hoarfrost in color, similarly had to be collected before it was melted by the heat of the sun, and was like a coriander seed in size but white in color. Numbers describes it as having the appearance of bdellium, adding that the Israelites ground it and pounded it into cakes, which were then baked, resulting in something that tasted like cakes baked with oil. Exodus states that raw manna tasted like wafers that had been made with honey. The Israelites were instructed to eat only the manna they had gathered for each day. Stored manna “bred worms and stank”: the exception being that stored the day before the Sabbath (Preparation Day), when twice the amount of manna was gathered. This manna did not spoil overnight. Exodus 16:2324 states. This is what the Lord commanded: Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning. So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. Manna in the New Testament. In the Bread of Life Discourse in John’s Gospel, the evangelist refers three times to the manna which the Jews’ ancestors ate in the desert: the Jews refer to the manna given to them by Moses as a sign of God’s promised covenant, and Jesus asserts that the manna was from God and not from Moses, and that the people who ate it were nourished on their journey but ultimately died. In contrast, according to the gospel, Jesus offered living bread, and whoever ate this bread would never die. All major credit cards.
