B. K. Schnitzer (US, 19th C.) Folk Art Oil Painting Colonial Hunting Dog Scene
Depicts a great folk art primitive style hunting dog scene with two pointers in the woods accompanied by a hunter in 18th century colonial clothes. It is uniquely signed on the lower right in the shadow of a fallen tree by what looks like the artist B. Schnitzer as shown in the close up photo. Excellent subject matter by a folk artist with a great look to the frame as well that appears to be a gilted internal frame surrounded by recovered wood or a much older, possibly 18th century frame. A very unusual and excellent old 1800’s folk art piece. Condition : Painting is in great condition with some wear and scratches/loss to frame as described in condition details above. No noticeable major defects on the painting itself except for a small half inch scratch to the surface near the front dogs leg as shown in the close up picture and 2-3 tiny pinhead size chips where paint flaked off that is almost impossible to notice unless you look really close. Overall, a great condition painting for the age and could be hung and displayed as is. It measures total in frame at 21 1/4″ x 18 3/8″ with the painting itself at 14 1/8″ x 11 1/4″. The frame is quite nice at about 3 deep with an excellent look of weathering. I think the frame is much older then the painting and has survived with great character. A really unique piece! A portion of the sales price of this painting will be donated to Arts Unleashed, a charity that makes film and media projects to help dogs and companion animals! The item “B. K. LEON KENNEDY American, b. “WE LOVE WE LIFT OUR HANDS UP TO YOU WITH PRAISE 2015″. Signed and dated on front LOWER LEFT CORNER HIDDEN BY FRAME; signed, dated and title on verso. Size: 20″ x 16″ x. 5″ stretched canvas set in 25″ x 21 x 2 FRAME with four nails. Materials: Acrylic Paint, glass beads, glitter on stretched canvas. This work by Leon Kennedy is documented and archived for provenance, and included in his digital catalogue raisonné. African-American spiritual visionary Leon Kennedy b. 1945, Houston, Texas uses mixed media on found objects to paint ecstatic visions, memory paintings, and urban life portraits. Kennedy is featured on several pages of Rosnak’s Contemporary American Folk Art (Abbeville, 1996), and in Betty-Carol Sellen’s important survey, Self Taught, Outsider, and Folk Art (McFarland & Company, 1999). Folk Art Messenger Vol. 3, 1997 reported that the acquisition makes the Smithsonian American Art Museum the world’s preeminent repository for American self-taught art. Mentioning Kennedy, Folk Art Messenger notes these works were the first American collection exhibited at the Collection de l’Art Brut, Switzerland, which testifies to its quality and uniqueness. It is our desire to see them as part of the history of 20th-century American art. The Leon Kennedy masterwork now resides at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, while photos of Kennedy and other materials of Kennedy’s are available for study at the National Archives in Washington, D. Leon Kennedys works are included in many excellent public and private collections. Like Reverend Howard Finster, Kennedy often references the Bible, usually on verso. Exhibited and compared with Bill Traylor, Martin Ramirez, Adolf Wölfli, and others steeped in Visionary Spiritual vernacular. Contemporary American Folk Art: A Collectors Guide. Winner gets a spectacular, early folk art Americana watercolor and ink painting depicting a whaling scene. This is a very desirable subject, and very early. I would date the painting to the mid-late 1800’s. The painting is coming for sale fresh from a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Estate. The frame measures 22.5″ x 14.5″, with the image measuring 20″ x 12″. The painting is in good, original condition, with staining around the left, right, and bottom edges, as seen magnified in picture 5. The painting is housed in a distressed, antique painted gold frame. In my opinion, it can be hanged as-is, but the winner may want to have it re-framed to cover some of the staining around the edges. What a piece of early American folk art!!! All my items have been stored in a smoke and pet free home in a temperature controlled environment since coming into my possession. Please check out my other auctions, as I will be adding more sports cards, memorabilia, autographs, antiques, artwork, estate finds, and action figures within the next few weeks. I will look over every single offer, and since I need to make room for my newest finds, you never know! Don’t be afraid, even if you feel your offer is low. I will not take offense, and worst case scenario I will say no or make a counter offer. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, I can take more pictures if needed. She has always been creative in making things. For the last 20 years or so she has been a full time self-taught artist making: primitive furniture farm tables, islands etc. ; primitive folk art sculptures (using reclaimed wood with vintage found objects) ; and folk art paintings. Recently she is concentrating on a new medium of folk art paintings. These are 2D relief paintings on wood using a special techntique she developed. Each piece incorporates incredible attention to detail bringing out the personality of her subjects. She loves painting angels & animals (especially birds and dogs). But almost any idea in her head may turn up on a painting. She loves to make art and make folks smile. Most of all her art gives her happiness in creating and that’s what she loves to do! Her pieces can also be found in galleries & collected by many through the years. Her favorite art quote from Andy Warhol. Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, weather they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make more art. Be sure to check out my other items!
